Barry Gibb Lecture

April 2008

“We were privileged indeed to have Barry Gibb, now a practicing freelance artist and lecturer, here in Cape Town with us from East London, to present a lecture at our April Monthly Meeting on several of the impressionists; Manet, Monet, Renoir and Degas. He was previously a lecturer of History of Art at East London College for 8 years and was also the headmaster of Belgrave Art Centre for 23 years. His knowledge on art history is immense, and the lecture was lively, dynamic and fun. The lecture not only covered all the classic art works, but Barry also provided insights into the relationships between the artists and the circumstances surrounding each painting. All present enjoyed his wit and his ease of delivery, and I’m sure he could have kept us enthralled for the rest of the evening, with his wonderful art knowledge and vast repertoire of anecdotes.

Although a number of the video clips did present a few technical hiccoughs during the evening, these were overcome by the inimitable presence of Ken Kynoch, who demonstrated his superhero prowess, deftness and fitness, as well as the talents of a hapless “Button” who happened to be in the right seat at the right time, operating the ‘Ken-activator’ knob! She alternatively took the form of Lorna Jakins and Helen Estcourt. The stuff of legends, I kid you not! An informative and entertaining evening not to be forgotten!”
