Hayden Proud Talk

Hayden Proud Talk

“The Painting Techniques of Vermeer & Rembrandt”
25 June 2009

The South African Society of Artists were delighted to have Hayden Proud, the esteemed author of a book called, "Vermeer", deliver an illustrated lecture, Painting Techniques of Rembrandt and Vermeer to SASA Members and guests at their June monthly meeting.

He first went into the details of how paint was made, including using cow urine, which was a first for me. Then the best part was when he showed us detailed slides of sections of old paintings which were absolutely fascinating as most of us artists will never get to see the famous masters hiding away in galleries of the world, never mind the cracks and how the paint was applied.

A truly enjoyable evening.  Thank you Hayden for sharing.

Hayden was born in Zimbabwe. He completed a B.A. Fine Arts degree (UCT), B.A. Honours (UNISA),  M.A. (Courtauld Institute of Art, London), Lectured Art History for 7 years at UCT and until April 2009 he was the curator of Historical Collections of Paintings and Sculpture at Iziko Museums ( SA National Gallery and the Michaelis Collection).
