Margot Hattingh, a SASA member and world-renowned artist, presented her very interesting lecture on ‘Art as Metaphor and Meaning”, despite the technological difficulties which prevented us from viewing the images that she had prepared to accompany and illustrate her words. Nonetheless, Margot had brought along several examples of her work, and spoke with vivacity and conviction about her personal artistic journey and the meanings behind her works.
Her use of a variety of mediums, her passion for communicating ideas through her artworks, and her private mythologies and use of symbolism made for a fascinating evening. She urged us all to explore the ideas and concepts which interest us, through the artistic process, rather than relying solely upon representational mimicry, thought-provoking indeed!
