The Merit Exhibition of the South African Society of Artists

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
28th of February - 8th of March 2009

This exhibition is known as the Merit because it comprises the work of 71 members who received above a certain number of points for the paintings they submitted for the Society's 101st  Annual Exhibition in Oct.07. Three independent judges evaluated the work and the artists could then produce a new body of work for this exhibition.

Fellows/ Associates
are members who, in 3 out of 4 consecutive years, submitted work for the Annual exhibition and equaled or exceeded 90 out of a possible 109 points. An admirable achievement as their work was selected from over 350 paintings submitted for the Annual each year.

Louis Chanu the well-known sculptor was invited to exhibit his stunning bronzes at the exhibition. Despite the hot weather, a record crowd attended the opening.

Desmond Colborne, renowned for his interesting courses and lectures did the honours and opened the exhibition. The work was greatly admired and resulted in excellent sales.
