Paul Birchall Demo

30th April 2009

On Thursday the 30th April we were privileged to have Paul demonstrate his very interesting technique of reverse painting.

The technique of painting in reverse on glass or perspex has been around for over 100 years and examples can be found in China and India. It became popular in Bavaria at the turn of the last century as a cheaper alternative to traditional stained glass and was used to make small decorative iconic religious images. Paul discovered the technique when he was studying in India and has worked in the medium for over 12 years.

It was intriguing to watch him as he slowly built up layers of collage with paper and gold leaf, acrylic paint and glue, on a base of Plexi Glass. He is ingenious with his inventive ideas in which to create his art! It was an amazing demonstration. Thank you Paul.
