Virginia MacKenny Walkabout

Walkabout of her Exhibition, “Foam Along the Waterline”
Irma Stern Museum
10th October 2008

SASA members were afforded the wonderful opportunity of joining the artist on a walkabout of her exhibition at the Irma Stern Museum. An unprecedented turnout of about 38 of our members met Virginia for the walkabout at the upstairs gallery on Tuesday, the 7th October. The exhibition comprised a collection of paintings and etchings resulting from four years of research and work, and we were entranced by her reminiscences and explanations. Virginia shared how her musings and concerns had culminated in the collection of works before us. Her beautifully painted works and the understated manner in which they are rendered, created many an entry point into the meaning behind each work, allowing each of us to relate in our own way to the works as well as the artist.

Her theme focused on concerns regarding the ‘ecological duress’ under which we live and the effect this has on our psyche and wellbeing.

Those present at the opening or the walkabout will agree that Virginia is an excellent and unaffected speaker and teacher, with an extraordinary depth of knowledge and accompanying practical ability which she imparts with ease and fluidity.
