Vyvyan P Myerson Talk
Fakes and Forgeries in Art and Antiques
30 July 2009
We, at the South African Society of Artists had the great pleasure of hosting the well-known art collector and professional appraiser, Vyvyan Myerson, at our July monthly meeting.
Vyvyan gave us an in depth talk about fakes and forgeries in art and antiques.
It was fascinating to learn how to tell if a glass was old or not. You look at the colour which defines the lead content, and an old glass rim will balance perfectly with the rim of the base of the glass. How professionals sometimes cannot tell the difference between a reproduced chair and the original antique one. The fact that there were so many forgers of fine art that have made an awful lot of money, sometimes more than the original artist.
It was a fascinating evening, thank you so much Vyvyan.
Vyvyan founded the Decorative Arts Society, Miniature Society and the Fine Arts and Decorative Society.
