The South African Society of Artists hold three exhibitions annually, usually held at the Sanlam Hall in the beautiful surrounds of the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town. All work at all three exhibitions is available for sale.
The Annual Exhibition: The Annual Exhibition is the society's showcase exhibition of the year. Members have the opportunity to submit three works each at an earlier Selection Day‚ where a panel of independent judges score the submitted artworks according to the same system used by the Royal Academy in London. Works achieving a sufficiently high score are selected for the Annual show. In addition, awards for the best works in the various categories are awarded, as well as a number of commendations.
The Merit Exhibition:The Merit Exhibition is an invitational exhibition, extended to those members who achieved excellent results on the previous Annual Exhibition Selection. According to the scores achieved, invited artists are permitted a related number of artworks, as part of a new body of work.
The Members Exhibition:he Members Exhibition allows each and every member of the society to participate, as each member may submit their single best painting of their choice. This is a self-selected exhibition and of particular advantage to newcomers and amateurs within the society to have the opportunity to show and sell their work, sometimes for the very first time.
