Every year SASA organises a Juried Selection where members are invited to submit up to three new artworks for judging by three independent art experts who assign points to each work.
These points are recorded on computer and, based on the number of works submitted, and calculated against the number of works that can be exhibited, a ‘cut-off’ mark is then established. Works that achieve or exceed that cut-off mark are then eligible to be exhibited at the 119th Annual Exhibition at the Richard Crowie Hall at Kirstenbosch.
The judges will decide on the winning entries and select the Best Of in each medium category. They will also choose work they deem Highly Commended and Commended.
It is important to note here that points scored at Selection also contribute to the achievement of Fellowship of the Society. To become a Fellow, artists need to score 75% or more of the overall score in three out of four consecutive years. It is in your best interests therefore to submit 3 works.
22 June to 10 July 2026 – Online submissions open [link will be shared with members via email]
1 August 2026 – Final judging at Cape Town Athenaeum
If a work submitted achieves the required points, it will then be required to be hung at the Annual Exhibition at Kirstenbosch, the date for which is 7th to 20th October 2026.
All work that achieves the required points must be available for the exhibition. The form filled in for the Juried Selection is also the form for the Annual Exhibition. This form will be retained by the society. No other forms will be needed by the successful artists. If work is sold prior to the exhibition, it must still be exhibited with a ‘sold’ sticker and the relevant commission will be applicable. Please bear this in mind when submitting work.
The winning and commended works will be displayed with a certificate and the winners presented with certificates and cups at the opening of the exhibition.
The Merit Exhibition usually takes place in January/February of the following year. This exhibition is also based on those members who submitted work for Juried Selection. In this case, the top 40 highest scoring artists are invited to exhibit new work (of their choice) at the Richard Crowie Hall in Kirstenbosch.
