MONOTYPE PRINTING WITH SUNITA HANSEN
29 AUGUST 2026 was a beauful day of Monotype Prinng. Our final workshop for the year was a wonderful way to end a busy and creative workshop programme. It was a hugely enjoyable day, filled with experimentation, laughter and the excitement of seeing beautiful artworks take shape.
Eleven artists gathered for the Monotype Printing workshop, with the talented and experienced art teacher Sunita Hansen guiding us through this fascinating printmaking process. Monotype printing brings together the spontaneity of painting and the unique transfer effects of
printmaking, with each print resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind artwork. No two monotypes are ever quite the same. Under Sunita’s guidance, the artists had the opportunity to create two prints – one in black and white and another in colour.
There was plenty of room to experiment, explore different techniques and discover the happy surprises that make monotype printing so special. It was one of those beautiful Cape Town days that felt more like spring than winter. The sunshine, creative energy and camaraderie made the day feel particularly special, and it was wonderful to see everyone immersed in the process and enjoying the freedom of creating something completely unique. Judging by the finished works and the happy faces at the end of the workshop, our final workshop of the year was a great success.
A heartfelt thank you to Sunita for sharing her knowledge, enthusiasm and creativity with us, and to all eleven artists who joined us and helped make it such a memorable day.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH JOHANNEKE STRYDOM FSASA
On 25 July 2026 SASA members enjoyed an inspiring day of landscape painting with acclaimed artist Johanneke Strydom at the Peter Clarke Art Centre. The workshop focused on creating depth in the landscape, with Johanneke generously sharing her knowledge, techniques and source material. She introduced participants to the concept of aerial perspective, describing the landscape in terms of veils and intervals to create a convincing sense of distance. Through tonal studies, attendees also learned how simplifying values can strengthen the structure and atmosphere of a landscape before introducing colour.
Johanneke’s clear teaching style, generosity and enthusiasm made the day both educational and enjoyable, giving participants practical tools they can apply to their own work. We got homework in the form of a landscape with hay bales. Some of us have already done ours.
It was a beautiful winter’s day filled with learning, creativity and great company. Our sincere thanks to Johanneke Strydom for so generously sharing her expertise, and to the Peter Clarke Art Centre for hosting us in such a fantastic venue.
Pastel over Watercolour by Penny Steynor SFSASA
On Saturday, 23 May, we enjoyed an inspiring and productive workshop with Penny Steynor SFSASA, exploring the technique of pastel over watercolour. The workshop showed how the combination of watercolour and soft pastel can produce striking results in a relatively short time, allowing much scope for artistic expression. Penny expertly led us through creating two artworks on the day. The resulting artworks were fresh, expressive, and full of character. It was a pleasure to spend such a beautiful day in the company of fellow artists, learning new skills from a masterful and generous teacher. The workshop was a resounding success and greatly appreciated by all who participated.

Backlighting Workshop with Johanneke Strydom
Johanneke said that is was such a happy workshop Saturday 22 November, about painting backlight in oils. It was such a pleasure to work with talented and bright artists as students.
They grasped the idea of using small Notan studies and 3 value sketches to work out a strong design. She said she was blown away by the beautiful paintings the students produced.
They worked from a photo their daughter took 6 years ago on their farm in the Karoo of a Familiar Chat with beautiful rim light. Well done everybody and thank you Johanneke for sharing your amazing talent and knowledge.
Charcoal & panpastel Workshop with sonja frenz
On Saturday, October 15th, Sonja Frenz led an inspiring charcoal and PanPastel workshop at the Peter Clack Art Center, where 11 enthusiastic participants explored the expressive possibilities of monochromatic drawing.
Attendees worked from a variety of reference materials- including birds, nests,bees and landscapes – and each created at least two sketches on both toned and light-coloured backgrounds. The workshop introduced techniques using natural charcoal and woodless charcoal, alongside tools such as paper stumps,kneaded erasers, battery-operated erasers and makeup sponges to achieve unique effects.
In their second sketch, participants incorporated PanPastel with charcoal,using specialized applicators to blend and layer. While PanPastel is more expensive, it’s notably less messy. According to Sonja, “Monochromatic drawings lend themselves to atmosphere-and you don’t even miss the colour.
