Selection Day

Every year, usually in August, SASA invites members to submit up to three artworks for judging by three independent art experts who assign points, out of 30, to each work.

This year, 2025, submissions will be done online from 8 July until 19 July, with artworks scoring above a certain mark being submitted for in-person judging on 16 August. It is from these works that the judges decide on the winning entries and select the Best Of in each medium category.  They also choose work they deem Highly Commended and Commended.

These points are recorded and works that achieve or exceed a predetermined cut-off mark are then eligible to be exhibited at the ANNUAL Exhibition.

Points scored at Selection Weekend also contribute to the achieving of Fellowship, Senior Fellowship and Master Fellowship of the Society.

It is important to note here that we encourage members to submit a total of 3 artworks in order to attain an overall qualifying score that leads to being invited to exhibit new artwork at our MERIT exhibition the following year.

The online submission phase of Selection Day will be open from 8 to 19 July 2025. Please find the Conditions of Entry attached.

Below is a guide on how the process will work.

Easy Guide to Joining Selection Day

How to Send Us Your Artwork

Fill Out the Form: Before the online submission opening date of 8 July 2025, we’ll email you a link to an online entry form you need to complete. This contains all the information we need about you and your artwork. Once you’ve completed it, just click “SUBMIT,” and it comes right to us—no need to email the form.

Send one Photo of Your Art: Take a clear photo of each artwork with a phone or camera and email the pictures to secretary@sasa-artists.co.za. If you don’t know how to take good pictures of your artwork, you can contact Ingrid on exhibitions@sasa-artists.co.za or Louise on secretary@sasa-artists.co.za. We will also have a video on our YouTube channel showing how to take good photos with a phone, so watch it if needed.  The link will be sent via email. Make sure to cover the signature on the artwork with the following label with the title and medium of the artwork clearly written in print. No manipulation of the image is allowed.

Pay the Entry Fee: The entry fee is explained in the Conditions of Entry attached. Please send the proof of payment to secretary@sasa-artists.co.za

How We Judge Your Artwork

Three judges will look at the photos of your artwork on a computer. This lets them take their time, look closely at the details, zoom in and review your work carefully to be fair

What Happens After Judging

We’ll send you an email with your scores and let you know if your artwork qualifies for the Annual Exhibition. If you achieve above a certain score, we will ask you to bring it to the Cape Town Athenaeum on August 16, 2025, for a second round of judging. This can be done in person or via courier. Should you want to courier your artwork, please email Mike Forrester on treasurer@sasa-artists.co.za. From these artworks the judges will choose the Best of, Commended and Highly Commended works.

Bringing Your Artwork

If your artwork is selected for the exhibition but doesn’t need in-person judging, you don’t have to bring it in to the Athenaeum. We’ll send you instructions via email for the Annual Exhibition, for which the dates will be confirmed.

We’re here to make this easy for you! If this new process feels overwhelming, contact Ingrid on exhibitions@sasa-artists.co.za or Louise on secretary@sasa-artists.co.za for assistance.
